The webinar is called “Dying – Doing It Differently”. I’ll be talking about how death is ‘coming out of the closet’; the need to reverse the medicalisation of dying in order to acknowledge and support the hugely potential time that it is, psychologically and spiritually. I discuss why someone might want to die consciously; why just being alive isn’t, in itself, the kind of preparation needed for a graceful, easy, even ecstatic dying; I point out the similarities between meditating and dying, and introduce the Sammasati Support-Person Training for 2013.

There will be a couple of meditations in which all are invited to participate, and some suggestions around being at the bedside of someone who is very ill or dying; and time for your questions too (I enjoy being challenged!).

What’s a webinar?

A webinar is basically a web seminar – it’s like going to a talk except that you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home and nor does the presenter. This means that you can have presenters and attendees in different parts of the world all online at the same time – fantastic! This is great for us as The Sammasati Project has newsletter readers and Facebook Fans on all continents. Generally the presenter will talk and show some slides and attendees can ask questions via a chat box and be responded to live by the presenter. We’ll be using a platform called GotoWebinar where you can register for the webinar with Maneesha.

Registering for the webinar

This is very simple and takes a few seconds. Just click on the registration link and enter your name and primary email address and click ‘Confirm’.  It would also be helpful if you answered the few optional questions such as which continent you are on and whether you are already familiar with meditation. During the registration process you will probably see a dropdown box asking if you want to check the start time in your local time zone – so you might want to do this though it’s not strictly necessary. If you know that you won’t be able to attend the webinar live (e.g. because you’re at work or it’s 3am in the morning for you), please register anyway and you will get a notification of the recorded replay. Wherever possible, it’s much better to attend live as that way you can ask questions and webinar recordings sometimes don’t work.

Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email from Gotowebinar with a blue button saying ‘Join Webinar’. If you do not get this confirmation email, please check your spam folder and mark it as ‘not spam’ to ensure you receive further emails from Gotowebinar. You will then receive a reminder email from Gotowebinar 1 day before and 1 hour before the webinar starts.

Joining the live webinar

You can use the ‘Join Webinar’ button on any of these emails to join the webinar just before the start time. If you have used Gotowebinar before, we suggest you join the webinar at least 10 minutes early as we have a limit of 100 people on the webinar – so it’s first come, first served. If this is the first time you have used Gotowebinar, we suggest you join 30 minutes before to ensure that your computer can run the Gotowebinar application. For first-time users, if you are on a PC, the Gotowebinar application should download automatically when you click the ‘Join Webinar’ button; if you are on a Mac, you may be prompted to download the application – just click ‘Yes’ if the ‘Allow Permission’ box pops up. If you want to test things out beforehand, you can join a test session.

You don’t need any special equipment such as a webcam or headset (headphones and microphone) to join a webinar, however, if you have a headset and would like to share an experience or ask a question ‘on air’ this is only possible if you have a headset. (There is generally too much feedback if you try to use your inbuilt computer microphone).

If, for any reason, you are unable to join the webinar online, it is also possible to join it via your telephone  – see the telephone number and access code on your confirmation email:
